Embracing the Feels: Become Energy Aware

I am often asked if I preach toxic positivity. At first, my immediate response was no, as anything labeled “toxic” seems inherently negative. However, upon stepping out of defensive mode, I delved into the realm of toxic positivity through research, seeking to understand its nuances. It’s commonly defined as the idea that people should maintain a positive mindset regardless of how challenging a situation may be. In this blog, we will talk about the importance of embracing your feelings and using your energy awareness to change your mindset.

Defining Toxic Positivity

Upon reflection, I realized that I do not subscribe to this ideology of Toxic Positivity. Some people may think I practice it because I am so happy and I may agree that at one time, I did wear the “TP Mask” but now I do not. While I believe in the power of mindset to set intentions, I also acknowledge the importance of acknowledging when things are not okay. I vividly recall a period when my daughter was about to travel to a region experiencing conflict, and during that time, my support network seemed absent when I needed them most. I felt a profound sense of loneliness and fear for my safety. For nearly three months, I allowed myself to sit with these emotions, accepting that it was okay not to be okay.

Embracing Authentic Emotional Responses

In my coaching program, we discuss this as becoming Energy Awareness. In the above situation, I was sitting at a level 1 energy level. It’s characterized by feelings of victimhood, apathy, and lethargy. This space, while challenging, serves a crucial purpose. It allows us to protect ourselves, showcases our vulnerability, and invites sympathy, kindness, and compassion from others. It also enables us to experience emotions in their raw, unfiltered form.

Navigating Energy Levels Effectively

Toxic positivity prevents us from reaching this level one energy state by masking our true feelings. However, suppressed emotions often resurface explosively, akin to a volcano eruption. The key lies in understanding when we are at a level one energy state and recognizing when it’s time to uplift ourselves. This duration can vary—from a day in some instances to several months, depending on the situation. The critical factor is self-awareness and knowing how to initiate positive change when needed.

Your Path to Emotional Empowerment

When we can become energy aware rather than reaching for the easy toxic positivity tool, we can address things.
